Members of the club — together with the club station — actively participate in some major worldwide amateur‑radio contests, covering HF, VHF/UHF, and multi‑mode events throughout the year. Our operating team includes both local members and foreign amateur‑radio operators who join us specifically to take part in contests from Malta, taking advantage of the island’s excellent propagation footprint and unique 9H prefix. This international collaboration has become a defining feature of our contesting activity: visiting operators are welcomed into the station, integrated into the operating schedule, and encouraged to contribute their skills and experience.
A portable operating event is a hands‑on, outdoor activity in which amateur‑radio operators establish temporary stations in the field, using portable antennas, battery or generator power, and lightweight equipment. These events emphasize self‑sufficiency, technical skill, and adaptability, as operators must plan their station layout, manage power, optimize antennas, and deal with environmental factors such as terrain, weather, and noise.

The club maintains an open‑access policy for its station, allowing any licensed amateur, whether a club member or a visiting operator, to make use of the equipment and facilities. This approach encourages activity, experimentation, and international collaboration. Non‑members who hold a valid amateur‑radio licence are equally welcome to operate, giving foreign visitors, travelling amateurs, and newcomers an opportunity to experience operating from Malta and enjoy the advantages of the 9H prefix.
Membership is granted for a one‑year term, after which it may be renewed annually. This structure ensures that records remain current, encourages ongoing engagement with club activities, and provides members with the opportunity to update their details or adjust their level of involvement each year. Annual renewal also helps the club maintain an active and committed membership base, while giving individuals the flexibility to continue their participation on a yearly basis.
The application process is open to all interested, and prospective members are encouraged to contact MARC directly for full details. The club provides guidance on membership categories, fees, and any documentation required, and will assist applicants throughout the process. By keeping the application form open rather than restricted to specific periods, MARC ensures that newcomers, visiting operators, and returning members can join at any time during the year. The club welcomes non‑licensed individuals who are interested in amateur radio but have not yet obtained their licence. Joining as a non‑licensed member gives you full access to the club’s learning environment, activities, and community. You can attend meetings, participate in technical workshops, observe operating sessions, and become familiar with radio equipment and operating practices.
Membership fees may be settled directly at the club premises in cash, allowing applicants to complete their registration quickly and conveniently during any club meeting or activity. Alternatively, payments can be made by cheque, which should be issued payable to “Malta Amateur Radio Circle”. This provides flexibility for members who prefer traditional payment methods or who may not be able to visit the premises in person.
